247 - FLEXIBLE BASE

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)  Specify aggregate type and grade on the plans.
2)      Do not use additives such as but not limited to lime, cement, or fly ash to modify aggregates to meet the requirements of Table 1, unless shown on the plans.
3)      Material Type E will be as shown on the plans.
4)      Grade 4 material requirements will be as shown on the plans.
5)      Minimum plasticity index will be as shown on the plans.
6)      Material grades 1 and 2 must meet both the classification and the minimum compressive strength unless otherwise shown on the plans.
7)      Wet ball mill will be required instead of soundness, unless otherwise shown on the plans.
8)      Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and other recycled materials may be used when shown on the plans.
9)      When RAP is allowed, do not exceed 20% RAP by weight unless otherwise shown on the plans.
10)  The percentage limitations for other recycled materials will be as shown on the plans.
11)  When the Department furnishes and requires the use of recycled materials, unless otherwise shown on the plans;

  • Department required recycled material will not be subject to the requirements in Table 1,
  • Contractor furnished materials are subject to the requirements in Table 1 and this Item,
  • the final product, blended, will be subject to the requirements in Table 1, and
  • for the final product, unblended, (100% Department furnished required recycled material) the liquid limit,
  • plasticity index, wet ball mill, classification, and compressive strength is waived.

12)  Department-owned recycled material is available to the Contractor only when shown on the plans.
13)  The use of Contractor-owned recycled materials is allowed when shown on the plans.
14)  Show subgrade and base typical sections, lines and grades on the plans.
15)  Stockpiles must have a total height between 10 and 16 ft. unless otherwise shown on the plans.
16)  Deliver the required quantity to each 100-ft. station or designated stockpile site as shown on the plans.
17)  Remove or scarify existing asphalt concrete pavement in accordance with item 105, "Removing Stabilized Base and Asphalt Pavement," when shown on the plans or as directed.
18)  Specify proof-rolling, when required, on the plans.
19)  Construct layers to the thickness shown on the plans.
20)  Compact using density control unless otherwise shown on the plans.
21)  Multiple lifts are permitted when shown on the plans or approved.

251 - REWORKING BASE COURSES

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)   When new base is required, specify type and grade on the plans.
2)      Show typical sections, lines and grades of the work on the plans.
3)      Specify the width and depth of work on the typical sections.
4)      Specify the type of work on the plans.
5)      Specify proof-rolling, when required, on the plans.
6)      Before scarifying, clean the existing base of objectionable materials by blading, brooming, or other approved methods, unless otherwise shown on the plans.
7)      Scarifying: Remove asphalt concrete pavement, surface treatment, plant-mix seal, and micro-surfacing when shown on the plans and in accordance with applicable items.
8)      Scarify existing material for its full width and depth, unless otherwise shown on the plans.
9)      Break material into particles of not more than 2-1/2 in., unless otherwise shown on the plans.
10)  Before replacing salvaged material, prepare subgrade as shown on the plans or as directed.
11)  Replacing: Deposit salvaged material on the prepared subgrade and sprinkle, blade, and shape the base to conform to the typical sections sown on the plans or as directed.
12)  Replacing: When shown on the plans, place new base material and uniformly mix with salvaged material.
13)  Stockpiling: Store salvaged base material at a location shown on the plans or as directed.
14)  Reshaping: Mix and shape scarified base to conform to the typical sections shown on the plans.
15)  Reshaping: When shown on the plans, furnish new base material, and uniformly mix with scarified material before shaping.
16)  Refinishing: Cure before placing the pavement on the refinished base, as shown on the plans.
17)  Compact using ordinary compaction or density control as shown on the plans.
18)  When compaction is by density control, compact to at least 98% of the maximum density determined by Tex-113-E, unless otherwise shown on the plans.
19)  Measurement by cubic yard in original position and square yard will be established by the widths and depths shown in the plans and the lengths measured in the field.
20)  When square yard measurement is used, limits of measurement will be as shown on the plans.

5)      Target lime content may be shown on the plans.
6)      When treating existing materials, asphalt concrete pavement is limited to a maximum of 50% unless otherwise shown on the plans or directed.
7)      Show typical sections, lines and grades for treatment on the plans.
8)      Specify removal of existing asphalt concrete pavement on the plans, when required.
9)      Specify proof-rolling, when required, on the plans.
10)  Compaction will be by density control unless otherwise shown on the plans.

263 - LIME TREATMENT (PLANT-MIXED)

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)      Specify type and grade of new base material on the plans.
2)      Specify type and application rate of asphalt or emulsion on the plans, when permitted for curing.
3)      Target lime content may be shown on the plans.
4)      When treating existing materials, asphalt concrete pavement is limited to a maximum of 50% unless otherwise shown on the plans or directed.
5)      Show typical sections, lines and grades for treatment on the plans.
6)      When shown on the plans, provide equipment that will spread the lime-treated mixture in a uniform layer in 1 pass.
7)      When shown on the plans, equip spreaders with electronic grade controls.
8)      Specify details of subgrade and/or base preparation on the plans.
9)      Specify layer thicknesses on the plans.
10)  Maximum layer thickness is 8 in. unless otherwise shown on the plans.
11)  Compaction will be by density control unless otherwise shown on the plans.
12)  Multiple lifts are permitted when shown on the plans.
13)  When compaction is by density control, the bottom course of the base will be compacted to at least 95% of the maximum density unless otherwise shown on the plans. Subsequent courses will be compacted to at least 98% of the maximum density unless otherwise shown on the plans.

292 -ASPHALT TREATMENT (PLANT-MIXED)

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)      Furnish natural aggregates or crushed concrete unless otherwise shown on the plans.
2)      Furnish aggregates that conform to the requirements shown in Table 1 and specified in this Section unless otherwise shown on the plans.
3)      When shown on the plans, other recycled materials, including reclaimed asphalt concrete pavement (RAP), are allowed up to the maximum percentage shown on the plans.
4)      When RAP is allowed by the plans, use no more than 30% unless otherwise shown on the plans.
5)      When the Department furnishes and requires the use of recycled materials, unless otherwise shown on the plans;

  • Department required recycled material will not be subject to the requirements in Table 1,
  • Contractor furnished materials are subject to the requirements in Table 1 and this Item, and
  • the final product, blended or unblended, will be subject to the requirements in Table 2.

6)      Department-owned recycled material is available to the Contractor only when shown on the plans.
7)      The location, approximate asphalt content, and approximate gradation will be shown on the plans for Department-owned RAP sources in a stockpile condition prior to Contract execution.
8)      Return unused Department-owned recycled materials to the Department stockpile location designated by the Engineer unless otherwise shown on the plans.
9)      The use of Contractor-owned recycled materials is allowed when shown on the plans.
10)  Los Angeles abrasion test may be used in place of wet ball mill test only when shown on the plans.
11)  Specify type and grade of asphalt binder on the plans.
12)  Unless otherwise shown on the plans or approved, furnish CSS-1H, SS-1H, or a PG binder with a minimum high temperature grade of PG 58 for tack coat binder in accordance with Item 300, "Asphalts, Oils, and Emulsions."
13)  When shown on the plans, use the type and rate of additive specified.
14)  The Engineer will evaluate the mixture for moisture susceptibility in accordance with Tex-530-C unless otherwise shown on the plans.
15)  A maximum of 10% stripping is allowed unless otherwise shown on the plans.
16)  Specify the grade of asphalt treatment on the plans.
17)  Show typical sections, lines and grades for treatment on the plans.
18)  Specify proof-rolling, when required, on the plans.
19)  Compaction will be by density control unless otherwise shown on the plans.
20)  For density control, unless otherwise shown on the plans, obtain required roadway specimens as directed.
21)  Use Surface Test Type A in accordance with Item 585, "Ride Quality for Pavement Surfaces," unless otherwise shown on the plans.
