| Each year, TxDOT and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
cooperatively develop and submit the “Progress Report on Using Scrap Tires
and Crumb Rubber in Texas Highway Construction Projects” to Texas
legislators. The report presents the status of scrap tires in Texas and
identifies beneficial uses of scrap tires, including highway construction.
As reported in the January 2006 report (view
PDF), in FY05, TxDOT:
- awarded contracts that will increase its consumption of tire rubber to 17,400
tons in chip seals, asphalt paving, crack sealer, and other applications
- increased spending to $132 million on those products
- demonstrated and evaluated innovative transportation-related uses for
tire-rubber products, including tire bales for slope repair and for embankment
construction, guard-rail spacer blocks, and vegetation-control mats around
signposts and guardrail posts.
