Rail
The Rail Division oversees railroad planning, inspection,
at-grade rail crossings, management of the South Orient Railroad
and oversight of rail public transit safety.
Texas has 9,784
public highway and rail crossings. It leads all other states in
total rail route miles, with 10,384. In 2010, more than 8.8 million rail
carloads travelled through the state, the second-largest volume
in the nation.
