Midlothian Bypass dedication ceremony March 2 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE; February 28, 2006 A dedication ceremony for the US 287 (Midlothian) bypass will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at the Midlothian Conference Center, located at 1 Community Circle. The Midlothian Chamber of Commerce FOCUS 287 Team Committee is hosting the event. Scheduled speakers include Governor Rick Perry, State Rep. Jim Pitt, Congressman Joe Barton and FOCUS 287 TEAM Chair Maurice Osborn. When opened to traffic in late summer, the US 287 Midlothian bypass will provide an alternate route for heavy through truck traffic and is expected to alleviate congestion and improve mobility through Midlothian, said Bill Hale, district engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Dallas District. "US 287 is a major thoroughfare linking I-35W and I-45, it not only serves as a vital corridor for the trucking industry, but will provide a prime facility to support the expected growth and increased traffic of the area." Located along the northwest quadrant of Ellis County, the bypass cuts through a rapidly developing area that has seen a dramatic population increase in recent years. Several projects have doubled the number of mainlanes from two to four along US 287 from the Johnson County Line to just west of Waxahachie to accommodate the area’s anticipated growth. Construction of the $46.6 million bypass began in October 2003 and is expect to complete in August 2006. Contractor for the project is J.D. Abrams, L.P. of Austin. TxDOT currently has 15 projects totaling $215 million in Ellis County under construction.
