Frontage roads part of $84 million project in Collin County

Motorists will soon drive on a new portion of the SH 121 frontage roads between FM 2478 (Custer Road) and SH 289 (Preston Road). The newly constructed lanes will open with a traffic switch at 10 p.m., Thursday, April 20.

The frontage roads are part of an $84 million reconstruction project between the Dallas North Tollway and Custer Road on SH 121. Currently, the roadway is being reconstructed as a six-lane frontage road with mainlanes and an interchange at SH 289.

Eastbound and westbound traffic will switch from the existing roadway to the new frontage roads permanently. While motorists enjoy the recently built frontage roads, crews will embark on constructing the new mainlanes for SH 121.

Additionally, Ohio Drive at SH 121 will close to through traffic Thursday night. Northbound traffic on Ohio Drive will turn right onto eastbound SH 121. Southbound traffic will turn right onto westbound SH 121.

Prior to the opening of the frontage roads, changes in traffic flow will occur along SH 121 after 9 a.m., Wednesday, April 19. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction at Coit Road and shifted to the southbound side. At Hillcrest Road, north and southbound traffic will be shifted to the northbound side. Both traffic activities will occur to allow for construction at the intersections of Coit and Hillcrest Roads.

Flaggers will direct motorists during all traffic switches. Message boards will be placed along the construction area with information on the traffic activities.

In the event of inclement weather or unforeseeable events, construction activities relating to the opening of the frontage roads will be rescheduled for 10 p.m., Monday, April 24.
