Description: Measurement of staff satisfaction with TxDOT operations.

How is it measured? The employee engagement score is based on results from the Survey of Employee Engagement (SEE) administered by The University of Texas at Austin Institute for Organizational Excellence.

The SEE consists of 48 items used to assess how the organization functions. The items are on a 5-point scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. A score above 350 indicates more employees are satisfied than are dissatisfied.

The overall score represents the comprehensive score for the organization. The score by category is an average of similar items grouped together. These categories capture the concepts most utilized by leadership and drive organization performance and engagement.

Why this matters? The SEE results are provided to state legislators for use during the biennial legislative sessions. The survey focuses on the key drivers necessary to engage employees toward successfully fulfilling the vision and mission of TxDOT.

What are the results? The overall employee engagement score in 2022 improved from where it was in 2020.

In late 2018, we created the Employee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Section within the Human Resources Division. This section is dedicated to helping the agency encourage a welcoming environment for all employees.

The mission of the section is to encourage embracing a diverse and inclusive environment where employees can freely communicate their ideas, concerns, abilities and differences to foster equity and innovation. To help achieve this mission, the section is working on several initiatives, including:

  • Using data and employee surveys to inform the current state and the desired future state.
  • Creating “safe spaces” for healthy dialog around sensitive topics through brown bag lunches and other training sessions.
  • Providing tools and support to Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) focused on women, Hispanics/Latinx/a/o, Black/African Americans, veterans, employees with diverse abilities, and individuals representing the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Developing a new Diversity Certification Program.
  • Piloting an Infants at Work (IAW) program.

Changing the diversity of any culture is not easy, but the Employee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Section will continue to offer more options to keep TxDOT in touch with today’s employees and the modern workplace.
