300 - ASPHALTS, OILS, AND EMULSIONS

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Asphalt Materials should be specified in the plans for Items in which they are used.

PAYMENT DESCRIPTION
1) The asphaltic materials described in this specification will be measured and paid for in accordance with governing specifications for the Items of construction in which these materials are used.

301 - ASPHALT ANTISTRIPPING AGENTS

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Method of addition for Hydrated Lime or Lime Slurry may be specified in the plans.

302 - AGGREGATES FOR SURFACE TREATMENTS

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)  Type(s) and grade(s) of aggregate must be shown on the plans.
2)  Specify Surface Aggregate Class.
3)  Specify any additives or antistrip if desired.
4)  Show on the plans if Flakiness index is to be other than 17 max.
5)  Show on the plans if Coarse Aggregate Angularity for crushed gravel is required to be other than 85% min.
6)  Show on the plans if the Water Absorption for Lightweight Aggregate is required to be different than 12.0% max.
7) For precoated aggregates, a target value for the desired percent by weight of residual bitumen coating on the aggregate can be shown on plans or can be approved by the Engineer.
8) Specify delivery location on the plans.

PAYMENT DESCRIPTION
1) The aggregates provided in accordance with this specification will be measured and paid for in accordance with governing specifications for the Items of construction in which these materials are used.

305 - SALVAGING, HAULING, AND STOCKPILING RECLAIMABLE ASPHALT PAVEMENT

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Limits, depths, and/or locations for removing existing asphaltic concrete pavement and/or  asphalt stabilized base must be shown on plans.
2 ) Show on the plans if reclaimed material is required to be other than 95% passing 2-in. sieve.
3)  Stockpile locations can be shown on plans or can be approved by the Engineer.
4)  Special stockpile directions may be shown on plans or directed by the Engineer.
5)  Plans may show sediment control fence around stockpile locations.
6) Plans may show or Engineer may approve allowing or requiring salvaged materials to be used in other construction items of the project.

310 - PRIME COAT

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)  Limits, area, and/or locations must be shown on plans.
2)  Type and grade of bituminous material must be shown on plans.
3)  The rate of application can be shown on plans or can be as directed by the Engineer.
4) Blotter may be required at the rate specified in the plans.

314 - EMULSIFIED ASPHALT TREATMENT

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Limits, areas, and/or locations must be shown on the plans.
2) Type and grade of emulsified asphalt must be shown on the plans.
3) The emulsified asphalt percentage in the emulsion/water mixture can be shown on the plans or can be as directed by the Engineer.
4) When the emulsified asphalt and water mixture is incorporated into the top portion of the subbase or base course, the depth and width must be shown on the plans.
5) The rate of application can be shown on the plans or can be as directed by the Engineer.

315 - FOG SEAL

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Limits and/or locations must be shown on plans.
2) Type and grade of emulsified asphalt must be shown on plans.
3) The percent of emulsified asphalt in the emulsion/water mixture can be shown on plans or can be as directed by the Engineer.
4) The rate of application can be shown on plans or can be as directed by the Engineer.

316 - SURFACE TREATMENTS

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Specify if construction consists of a one, two, or three-course surface treatment application.
2) Limits, areas, and/or locations must be shown on the plans.
3) Type(s) and grade(s) of asphalt must be shown on the plans.
4)  If the Contractor is to supply aggregate, the type(s) and grade(s) of aggregate must be shown on the plans.
5)  If the Contractor supplies aggregate, specify if a surface aggregate class other than “B or better” is required.
6) Specify transverse variance rate, if needed.  Suggest a range of 10% (Ex. 22 -32).
7)  Specify additional roller requirements, if needed.
8) Plans may show, or Engineer may allow the use of asphalt storage tanks.
9) Any limit on aggregate haul truck size may be shown on the plans.
10) Specify start and stop dates for asphalt season.
11) The rates of application of asphalt and aggregate must be shown on the plans (for estimation purposes only).
12)  Show on the plans if the Department will furnish aggregate. If so, specify aggregate stockpile locations.
13)  Specify any requirements for removal of pavement markers.
14)  Specify if vegetation is to be removed and pavement edges are to be bladed.
15)  Specify the method of measuring asphalt (volume, weight) and may show another method of measuring weight or volume other than the default methods shown in the specification.

318 - HOT ASPHALT-RUBBER SURFACE TREATMENTS

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Specify if construction consists of a one, two, or three-course hot asphalt-rubber surface treatment application.
2) Limits, areas, and/or locations must be shown on the plans.
3) Asphalt-Rubber Binder II or III, as defined in Item 300, must be shown on the plans.
4) If the Contractor is to supply aggregate, the type(s) and grade(s) of aggregate must be shown on the plans.
5) If the Contractor supplies aggregate, specify if a surface aggregate class other than “B” is required.
6) Specify transverse variance rate, if needed.  Suggest a range of 10% (Ex. 22 - 32.)

320 - EQUIPMENT FOR HOT MIX ASPHALT MATERIALS

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)  If remixing equipment is desired, specify on the set of plans.
2) If the use of a motor grader is allowed, specify on the set of plans.

330 - LIMESTONE ROCK ASPHALT PAVEMENT

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1)  Specify the Type (I or II) and Grade of LRA for each course.
2)  Specify surface aggregate classification requirements.
3) Specify if surface aggregate classification requirements apply to other than surface courses.
4)  Specify any additional aggregate requirements not shown in Table 1.
5)  Tack coat type and grade may be specified or as approved.
6) Additives type and rate may be specified or as approved.
7)  Show on the plans if requirements for Tex-530-C are different than Table 5.
8)  Show on the plans if windrow dumping of mixture is not allowed.
9) If a motor grader is allowed, specify on plans.
10) Specify if ride quality requirements are waived or requiring other than Type A.
