Previous East Side Studies

There are several major east-side arterials in addition to I-10. These arterials are not included in the study area limits. Since 1987, several studies have been conducted on portions of these major arterials. These studies include:

  • FM 76 (North Loop Road) Feasibility Study – Completed July 1987
  • US 62/180 (Montana Avenue) Feasibility Study – Completed May 1995
  • Border Highway Extension Feasibility Study – Completed February 1997
  • SH 20 (Alameda Avenue) Feasibility Study – August 1998
  • Bridge of the Americas Ramp Connections – Completed April 2000

Not all study recommendations have been implemented. Projects are prioritized primarily by need. Study recommendations are typically broken into smaller projects and continue through the project development process, including preliminary design (schematic development), environmental analysis, right-of-way mapping and acquisition, final design, and, ultimately, construction. Depending on the project, the time from planning to construction could vary from five to fifteen years.

Given the extent of the previous studies, the I-10 East Corridor Study focus was primarily on I-10 strategies. Strategies were also considered for the eastern sections of Alameda Avenue and North Loop Road that were not previously studied.
