Happy New Year! 2022 was certainly a busy year for the I-610 West Loop/ I-69 Southwest Freeway interchange project. In July, the I-610 West Loop northbound exit to Westheimer was opened. In August, the I-610 West Loop northbound mainlane bridge was opened to traffic. In September, the I-69 southbound exit to Chimney Rock was opened. Soon after, the I-610 southbound mainlane traffic was moved from the I-610 southbound bridge to the existing I-610 northbound bridge, so the existing I-610 southbound mainlane bridge could be demolished.
Currently under construction:
On January 3, the I-610 southbound entrance ramp from Westheimer near the Houston Galleria was closed. It will reopen in late fall of 2023.
In February (2023), I-69 northbound and southbound will be completely closed for a weekend to hang the I-610 southbound mainlanes steel girders over I-69. Afterward, several weekday nights in February, crews will close both the northbound and southbound mainlanes of I-69 and the HOV lane to continue to secure the steel girders.
Toward the end of 2023, the new I-610 southbound mainlanes and the Westheimer entrance ramp is anticipated to open so the existing southbound I-610 (currently on the existing I-610 northbound bridge) can be shifted to the new southbound bridge followed by the demolition of the existing northbound I-610 bridge over I-69. This work includes finishing construction of the new I-69 southbound connector ramp to I-610 southbound.
We continue to make great progress with the I-610 West Loop/ I-69 Southwest Freeway interchange project. Each day we work with the contractor to take every opportunity to accelerate work where we can.
The goal is to complete this project as quickly as possible while also minimizing impacts to the traveling public. Remember to get closure information for this project at https://traffic.houstontranstar.org/swz/i69i610/ and follow us on Twitter at @HOU610at69.
