Drilled Shaft Inspectors Wkshp

DESCRIPTION: The Workshop will cover proper inspection of drilled shaft construction. Topics covered will include excavation in dry holes, using casing, and using slurry; tying and placement of reinforcing steel; sampling and testing of drilling slurry; testing and placement of concrete; and completion of necessary records. Emphasis will be placed on recent failures, their causes, and how they can be avoided in the future. Upcoming changes to the 2004 Standard Specification for Drilled Shaft Foundations will also be covered.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the current and proposed specifications governing construction of drilled shafts.
2. Describe specific techniques for inspecting specific items of work.
3. Perform testing of slurry specific gravity, viscosity, and sand content.
4. Describe how and why concrete slump requirements for drilled shafts vary considerably from slump requirements for other bridge elements.
5. Describe when the "Concrete Slump Loss Test" is required, and how to utilitze the results.l
6. Demonstrate the correct completion of required drilled shaft records.
