Bridge Deck Workshop

DESCRIPTION: This workshop discusses issues relevent to bridge deck construction: grading of PCP deck panels, types and usage of bridge screeds, control of concrete placement operations, inspection tips, troubleshooting tips, review of previous problems on deck placements and more. Two FHWA bridge deck construction videos are used to illustrate proper bridge deck construction methods and the second to highlight problem areas. Two references are provided to all participants: Bridge Deck Inspection Training Manual (no longer in use but provided as a reference) and C-1 Concrete Construction Manual. We also use a powerpoint presentation to highlight the key information in the reference manuals, making sure to discuss the important inspection items and provide siome guidance on when to inspect certain items. This presentation also discusses the 2004 specifications as they relate to bridge deck construction. The presentation provides basic information needed by inspectors and contractors in constructing bridge decks with time-critical inspection needs and the "high-points" for inspecting bridge deck construction. The program also discusses the changes to bridge deck construction in the Texas Standards Specifications 2004.

OBJECTIVES: he goal of the workshop is to provide the inspectors with a basic understanding of bridge deck inspection. The main purpose of the workshop is to give inspectors (and contractors, who are also invited) with a basic understanding of the requirements for bridge deck construction, the reasons behind them, and the critical items for inspection. One of the most important issues is the use of the PCP deck panels for deck construction. These panels facilitate faster and safer bridge deck construction but there are some behavioral issues with their use that are often misunderstood.
