Registration of Converted Truck Tractors |
PURPOSE
To inform you of the registration options for converted truck
tractors.
DETAILS
Questions have arisen concerning the way to register converted
truck tractors (see attachment for one example). The department
has given owners of these converted truck tractors the option to
register them as motor homes with passenger plates.
To qualify for passenger plates, these truck tractors should
pull only recreational-type trailers (i.e. boat, camper trailer,
etc.). When these converted truck tractors are used for hire, or
to pull trailers that represent commercial entities (racing
vehicle trailer, competition horse trailer, vending trailer,
etc.), they are subject to the laws that govern commercial
vehicles. It is the owner's responsibility to make this usage
known at the time of application for title and registration. If
the vehicle displaying Passenger License Plates is stopped by law
enforcement for a traffic violation and is found to be operating
for hire or for commercial purposes, fines could be imposed, in
addition to fees and penalty for proper registration of the
vehicle.
