Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Data

We maintain an automated database of all reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in Texas.

Federal highway safety laws require the state to create this crash database for use in obtaining federal safety improvement funds. Section 409 of Title 23 of the United States Code, forbids the discovery and admission into evidence of reports, data, or other information compiled or collected for activities required pursuant to Federal highway safety programs, or for the purpose of developing any highway safety construction improvement project, which may be implemented utilizing federal-aid highway funds, in tort litigation arising from occurrences at the locations addressed in such documents or data. Information that is not available to a party in civil litigation, may be confidential under state law, pursuant to Tex. Gov't. Code Sec. 552.111.

The records retention schedule approved by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for crash data and reports is the current calendar year plus the 10 previous calendar years. Data for years beyond this period are not available. Each year TxDOT will continue to add one year to the retention schedule until the 10-year retention schedule is met.

As per Sec 550.065 of the Texas Transportation Code, not all reported motor vehicle crash information is releasable.

I want information at this level:  Crashes    Vehicles    People
For example a crash between three cars, one containing one person, the second containing two people, and the third containing five people. This scenario would yield one crash, three vehicles, and eight people. It's up to you which of these levels you want your data to reflect.
  • Crashes: Every crash counts as one.
  • Vehicles: Every unit (vehicle) counts as one.
  • People: Every person from every unit, pedestrian, bicyclist or other counts as one.

Data Filters - Limit the data results to the following criteria

A. Geographical Area:

Choose from the following five criteria to narrow the geographic limits of your search.

  • If you select "Option #1 -Statewide", you may not select any other option in Section A - Geographical Area.
  • A County selection is always required unless "Option #1 - Statewide" or "Option #3 - City" was selected.

1. Statewide: Every crash from the year(s) you selected is included.

2. County: Only crashes in the county you specify are included.

3. City: Only crashes in the city you specify are included.

City Name:

4. Highway or Local Street: Only crashes occurring on the roadway you specify are included. Data is not available based on specific block numbers. If using latitude and longitude, both must be provided for starting and ending points.

Highway Number or Street Name:

Starting Point on Above Roadway (Intersecting Highway/Roadway, Reference Marker, Latitude/Longitude Coordinates)

Ending Point on Above Roadway (Intersecting Highway/Roadway, Reference Marker, Latitude/Longitude Coordinates)

5. Intersection of Two Roadways:Only crashes occurring in or related to the intersection you specify are included.

First Highway Number or Street Name:

Intersecting Highway Number or Street Name:

B. Worst Injury Sustained in the Crash:

If you only want to receive data on crashes at a certain severity level, select the severity(ies) below. If you want all severity crashes in your data, select "All Crashes."

All Crashes

Fatality

Suspected Serious Injury

Non-Incapacitating Injury

Possible Injury

Any Injuries

No Injuries

C. Filtering Criteria

In addition to limiting your data to a geographical area (Section A) and crash injury level (Section B), you can also filter the data by other criteria. For example, if you request a crash count for crashes in Travis County and you only want crashes that involved alcohol, you can check the "Alcohol Involvement" filter below and your data will be limited to crashes that occurred in Travis County and involved alcohol for the time period you selected.

Choose from the following filtering criteria if needed.

Note: Only select options that you want your data filtered by. If you do not wish to limit your data further, do not select any options.

Note: By selecting one or more of the below filters, the scope of your data will be limited to only crashes, vehicle, or people that meet that filter's specified conditions. If you want all crashes, vehicles, or people do not select any filters.

Note: Your data will be limited to crashes that meet all of the items checked below. For example, if you checked Alcohol Involvement, Involved a Pedestrian, Involved a Bicycle, and Involved a Tractor Trailer/Semi, your data would only contain crashes that involved alcohol, AND a pedestrian, AND a bicycle, AND a tractor trailer/semi all in the same crash.

If you require multiple reports with different criteria, you should submit a separate request for each report.

Alcohol Involvement - crashes involving any person reported with a Contributing Factor of Under the Influence of Alcohol or Had Been Drinking, or test result with a blood alcohol content of greater than 0

Speed Involvement (Speeding Over Posted Limit and Speeding, Unsafe (Under Limit)) - crashes with a Contributing Factor of Unsafe Speed, Speeding-(Overlimit), and/or Fail to Control Speed

Drivers in a Specified Age Group (Define age group in the space below) - will only include crashes where the driver was in the requested age range.

(Example: 18-24)

Involved a Pedestrian - crashes with a Person Type of Pedestrian.

Involved a Pedalcyclist - crashes with a Person Type of Pedalcyclist.

Involved a Motorcycle - crashes with a Vehicle Body Style of Motorcycle or Police Motorcycle.

Involved a Tractor/Semi - crashes with a Vehicle Body Style of Truck Tractor.

If you require your data filtered in a way not listed, describe your criteria in the space below - be as specific as possible. You will be contacted if the requested filtering criterion is not available.

Additional Comments - Note: Please include any additional fields you would like included with your data.
