Category 11: Environmental mitigation to
address water pollution due to highway runoff and to reduce
vehicle-caused wildlife mortality while maintaining habitat
connectivity.
- Wetlands acquisition and restoration.
- Detention and sedimentation ponds.
- Construction of wildlife underpasses or
overpasses.
Example Project #1
Project Name: Plum St/19th St Water Mitigation
Project
Location: City of Paris
Project Description: This project's funding provided for the
construction of a storm water sedimentation and pollution mitigation
basin adjacent to 19th Street N.W. and Plum Street in the
City of Paris. The project included the acquisition of 3.3 acres of land

This highway water runoff mitigation
project covers more than 3 acres of land within the city limits of
Paris. |
 |
Drainage channels direct water into
retention areas for filtration. |
 |
Native plants and sedimentation areas
are introduced to filter runoff and provide green-space for the
city. |
 |
Creating new wildlife habitat is also
provided by this project. |
Example Project #2
Project Name: Beltway 8 Project - Water Quality Enhancement
Through Wetlands Creation Location: City of Houston
Project Description: The project consists of retrofitting the
existing storm water collection system for a portion of Beltway 8 in the
City of Houston to capture and pass tainted highway water runoff through
a system of wetlands. Wetlands were created on a portion of a 1,450-acre
tract of land owned by the Harris County Flood Control District.
District or Division: Houston District
Federal Funds: $1,632,000

Graphics show an overview and
cross-section of the wetlands filtration system that is located on a
portion of a 1,450-acre tract owned by the Harris Co. Flood Control
District. |
 |
The northern Beltway 8 boundary can be
seen in the distance, while the Union Pacific Railroad corridor runs
along adjacent to the project in the foreground. |
 |
Ornamental and flowering species of
wetland plants with high purification functions were chosen to
aesthetically enhance the project's appearance. |
 |
The site's topography was recontoured to
create a series of swales and islands to allow for maximum diversity
in wildlife habitats and to allow for the planting of hardwood
trees. |
